Chapter 7 – Theresa

My day was not getting any better. There were countless people yelling and screaming at me today. When I first got into the field of social work, I prayed to God to give me a job like this so that I could help people. Even though I wasn’t giving any money or services out of my own pocket, I still wanted to have that feeling of giving back. But as the years passed, I saw myself getting more and more numb to the fact that some people bring things on themselves. Like dropping out of school and having unprotected sex with a boy that is too young to even take care of himself, let alone a baby. Sometimes, I just have an ‘I don’t care’ attitude because sometimes the people who come into this office feel like we owe them something. Like I’m supposed to get them help right then and there. Working here can cause you to become a different person. If I didn’t have my faith in God and go to church on a regular basis to rejuvenate my mind, I don’t know how I would stay grounded.

“Excuse me, lady. Can you please help me? I’ve been here all morning, and my name still has not been called. My kid is hungry, and I need some help,” a lady explained while standing behind the counter holding up her baby, as if she was a poster child for the Heal the Land Campaign.

Here we go again. “I’m sorry, ma’am, but we have been very busy around here. What’s your case worker’s name? Let me see if I can expedite your appointment.”

Just as the lady was about to speak, Andrew walked behind me, grabbing the paper off the counter that the lady had laid down.

“I’ll take care it, Ms. Fuller. Ma’am, come with me, and I too am very sorry you have been waiting so long. What’s your name?” he asked, escorting her to a cubicle around the desk.

“Alex. Alex Morris,” she answered, adjusting the way she was holding her daughter. For some reason, she felt a little better because she started fixing her hair and clearing her throat all at the same time. Was it that Andrew was helping her? He is a very handsome young man. But I couldn’t look at him like that. He was way too young for me. And too young for that lady, too. Not to say he would find her attractive anyway. It’s just that a man like that is usually career-driven and is usually attracted to women that are career-driven as well. And this lady was definitely not career-driven. But I guess it would be nice to be in the presence of a young, handsome man and pretend that he wanted you too.

After about twenty minutes of helping other people to their case workers and answering all sorts of questions, I walked over to the copy machine and attempted to make copies of some spreadsheets I was holding in my hand.
